“Happy New Academic Year!”

I do hope you have all had a wonderful summer break and managed to find time to rest and spend some relaxing time with friends and family.

Over the summer the work of Columbus has continued in the areas of premises redecoration, plans for improvements to school practice and of course through the holiday activities of our Discovery Club.

Thank you to all staff who supported the Discovery Club throughout the holiday, enabling so many of our children and young people to access quality social experiences during this summer break.

Thank you must also go to colleagues and friends of the school who took part in the fundraising event that took place at the school on the 24th August.  Learning Support Assistant, Sara Wheldon, kindly organised a fundraising event for our ‘Christopher the Columbus Carrot’ Therapy Fund and all proceeds will go towards this therapy fundraiser.

Thanks in advance of this weekend’s fundraiser must go to Tracey Plane, Head of Learning for Physical Development and Michelle Fautley, Senior Administration Assistant, who will be completing a trial Mud Race in advance of the real thing which takes place on the 20th September at The Secret Nuclear Bunker in Kelvedon Hatch. The trial will also be in aid of the ‘Christopher the Columbus Carrot’ fundraiser.

The time and dedication shown by our staff is remarkable and I am forever grateful for the determination they show to support our children and young people in school times and even during their own personal times too.

In the weeks ahead, I look forward to sharing our updated Academy Improvement Plan which will go out to all families, pupils, staff and governors for consultation and to also offer opportunities to add in your own thoughts and suggestions of ways we can continue to improve what we do throughout the School and College.

One particular development I am very much looking forward to is the initiation of the Family Consultation Committee for which a number of you have shown interest and indeed intention to join. Our Family Support Advocates will be in touch soon to set up the inaugural meeting so we can continue to ensure the close partnership working with families into this new academic year.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new staff to Columbus. I wish them every success in their new roles and look forward to seeing the way that they enable our team to further develop and strengthen.

Our Academic Year Planner of key school and college events will soon be released and I look forward to seeing you all in the weeks ahead.
