Happy New Year to all our students, parents, carers and colleagues of Columbus School and College.

A great time was had by Discovery Club who enjoyed the pantomime at Cliffs Pavilion, Southend during the holidays. Our thanks to the cast of ‘Peter Pan’, including Christopher Biggins and David Hasselhoff, for making the students' day.

We start the New Year with the usual staff training to ensure that our children and young people are safely supported throughout the school days and to also ensure the skills set of those educating them is of the highest standard.

Training in the areas of Autism, assessment of learning and safeguarding/child protection all take place over the next two days and I am sure that these opportunities will enable our team to feel ever confident and empowered to give their very best to our young people.

In the weeks and months ahead, I am looking forward to working with our teams to identify further professional development opportunities on the back of another very successful round of teaching and learning observations last term. Standards across the academy continue to be strong.

The work of the Governors will also continue to grow in strength as they extend their capacity through the introduction of four new members to the board. These new members have experience and expertise in the areas of teaching and learning, care and support for families and education and business. Together, they will continue to offer challenge and support to me in ensuring the best possible outcomes for our young people and their families.

Wishing you all the very best for 2015. I look forward to working with you all in the year ahead.

Ginny Bellard.
